Fractional Remainders? eVeRyOnE KnOwS aBoUt ThAt 🤪🤪🤪🤪
In all my years of teaching mathematics to people of ALL ages, I have never once had a student give me a fractional remainder when working on the subject of division.
Sure, your kids will lie to you and tell you that “eVeRyOnE KnOwS aBoUt ThAt” (because they’ve ‘done’ fractional remainders in the topic called: Fractions!); however, they are 100% clueless when it comes to short and long division.
If you tell them you don’t want their decimal remainder, they will likely look at you as though you were an alien or, in some cases, burst into tears because “we don’t do it like that at school!”
Computer. Says. No.
This is because mathematics education is totally compartmentalised.
Yesterday, a group of adults (many of whom would describe themselves as ‘good at maths’), had their minds blown by my unconventional use of fractional remainders in the context of short and long division.
We had teenagers - yes, Guerrilla Ed Youth members attend all-day maths workshops on occasional Saturdays - exclaiming: “This makes so much sense now!”
Better still, there were 10 and 11-year-olds wiping the floor with their parents (all of whom went to school!!!); eating fractional remainders up with a spoon!
Guerrilla Educated children are smarter, more confident and more engaging than their ‘schooled’ counterparts.
I care not how many parents are ‘triggered’ by this.
Facts are facts and one only needs to bear witness to a Saturday Maths Workshop to see the empirical evidence.
When was the last time your son/daughter did ANY ‘school work’ on a Saturday?!
Bravo to the Guerrilla Ed Clan, I say!! 😍😍😍

Yesterday’s key lesson was:
Everyone THINKS they know how to teach long multiplication & division to their children, however all they are doing is botching the job as their primary school teachers did to them - primary school teachers are ALMOST NEVER mathematics specialists… and it shows.
As for the ‘home recreators’… I’d better keep my thoughts on those people to myself!
