That’s right, root 50 equals 5 root 2 and we have 10 and 11-year-olds figuring this out… schooled children almost never meet surds (roots) until aged 15 or 16 - if at all.
Higher Tier mathematics candidates are the only ones who study surds, usually in years 10 or 11 and the majority “don’t get it” anyway.
It is considered to be a level 8 or level 9 (A*) type of question at GCSE and surds form an important part of A-Level Maths (maths for 17 and 18-year olds).
How is it that the young guerrillas are so able?
It’s simple. They aren’t brainwashed into thinking that this or that part of maths is only for Year ‘x’ or Year ‘y’ students.
They have no idea that they are being introduced to advanced mathematical tools and concepts and therefore approach the subject undaunted.
