Knowledge might one day be the only thing you own
Knowledge might one day be the only thing you own… and if Klaus Schwab and his cronies get their way, we won’t even be permitted that.
In the darkest hours of the night, I have imagined what I would take with me if I had to leave my home in a hurry.
Practical things such as cooking utensils and a Trangia (outdoor stove) plus methylated spirits rank highly as do good-quality walking books and a warm, hardwearing blanket.
However, these are survival-type items and some of even the most hardy of things will have a shelf-life, but knowledge and skills on the other hand, if you are careful when and where you acquire them, will last you a lifetime.
Being a teacher, I worry about not having enough paper and pencils with me, or chalk and slate but it dawned on me that the thing that I need above all else is knowledge.
It’s no good having all the chalk and nothing to teach to anyone.
“All you can teach to your children is what you know, not what you can Google!”
It’s worth noting that if you have to look it up, you don’t really know it at all. You are using reference and research skills but true knowledge is what you can reliably teach to someone else without using a crib (cheat) sheet.
In the age of the internet we have been tricked into believing that the world’s encyclopaedias will always be at our fingertips and that the greatest teachers will be accessible 24/7 via online videos and flashy websites.
What would happen if the internet became inaccessible for some reason?
Could you hand-on-heart teach your children the vital 3R’s - Reading, wRiting & aRithmetic - up to the age of 16-years without any assistance at all?
It might be a big ask.
Especially, as we have been so spoilt by having calculators and encyclopaedias in our pockets and in the pockets of our children all these years.
Be prepared
Set time aside by ditching/severely limiting your social media to skill-up in all areas that you know you would need to teach your child if online resources were no longer available and schools were no longer an option.
Start with what you are weakest at
Begin with the most difficult academic subject. The discipline that is the most challenging often gets left until last but really needs far more time, attention, and effort than all of the things you are competent in combined.
If mathematics is your nemesis…
Then you ought to be with me on Wednesdays for the next 4 weeks. I am teaching everything you will need to know to properly ground your son/daughter in mathematics for education and for life.
I will be covering the essentials for parents of primary school children and a touch beyond.
At the end of the 4 x 90-minute classes you will be able to map out a mathematics curriculum for your son/daughter and have the confidence and the competence to begin delivering it yourself.
